Why Drawing and Art & Craft Boost Your Child's Creativity

Why Drawing and Art & Craft Boost Your Child's Creativity

A crayon scribble, a paper flower, a painted handprint — to a parent they are sweet keepsakes. To a child, they are a whole world of learning. An art and craft class for kids does far more than keep children busy. It builds creativity, focus and skills that help in school and life.

Why Art Matters in Early Childhood

Children often express through art what they cannot yet say in words. Drawing and craft let them explore colours, shapes and ideas, make choices and see their imagination come to life.

7 Benefits of Drawing and Art & Craft

1. Builds Fine Motor Skills

Holding crayons, cutting with child-safe scissors, tearing paper and using glue strengthen the small hand muscles needed for writing.

2. Boosts Creativity and Imagination

Art has no single right answer. Children learn to think in new ways and try their own ideas.

3. Improves Concentration

Finishing a drawing or craft teaches patience and focus.

4. Teaches Early Maths and Science

Shapes, patterns, symmetry, colour mixing and measuring are all part of art — building foundational numeracy.

5. Develops Language

When children describe their art — "This is my house and that's the sun" — they build vocabulary and storytelling skills.

6. Builds Confidence

Seeing their work displayed or taking it home to show family makes children proud.

7. Helps Express Emotions

Art gives children a safe way to share feelings, especially when words are hard.

Art Activities by Age

  • Ages 2–3: finger painting, crayon scribbling, sticker art, play dough
  • Ages 3–4: sponge painting, paper tearing, simple collage, colouring shapes
  • Ages 4–6: drawing people and scenes, cutting and pasting, origami basics, theme crafts

Tips for Parents

  • Praise the effort, not just the result: "You used so many colours!"
  • Ask open questions: "Tell me about your picture."
  • Avoid correcting: A purple elephant is perfectly fine.
  • Keep materials handy: paper, crayons, glue and old magazines.
  • Display their work on the fridge or a wall.

Process Art vs Product Art

There are two ways children can do art:

  • Product art — following steps to make something that looks a specific way, like a paper butterfly that matches the teacher's sample.
  • Process art — exploring materials freely, with no "right" result. The focus is on the experience: mixing colours, squishing clay, gluing whatever they like.

Both have value. Product art teaches following instructions and fine motor control. Process art builds creativity, independence and problem-solving. Young children benefit most from plenty of process art, with some guided projects as they grow.

Simple Art Materials Every Home Should Have

  • Chunky crayons and washable markers
  • Child-safe scissors and a glue stick
  • Plain paper and coloured paper
  • Washable paints and thick brushes
  • Play dough or clay
  • Recycled materials: boxes, bottle caps, newspaper, old greeting cards

Keep materials in a box your child can reach, and lay down newspaper to make clean-up easy.

Festival Crafts Through the Year

Festivals are perfect for art projects. Through the year, children at our centres create Rakhis for Raksha Bandhan, diyas and rangoli for Diwali, alpana for Durga Puja, stars and Santa masks for Christmas, and colourful decorations for Holi and Naba Barsha. These crafts connect art with culture and make every season special. See more in our post on celebrating Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja.

Art also supports handwriting and focus — key skills on our school readiness checklist.

Displaying and Talking About Art

When your child brings art home, ask them to tell you about it rather than guessing what it is. Write their words on the back with the date. Over the months, you'll see how their drawings and their language grow together — a wonderful record of their development.
